Red-Hot UNW Men Pick Up a Pair of Sweeps

MADISON, Wis.- The University of Northwestern Men's Tennis team continued its dominant start to the season Saturday, sweeping the floor clean with two 9-0 wins in Madison, Wisconsin. They faced Edgewood College in the opening match before closing with Buena Vista University.

Match 1: Edgewood College Eagles

The second doubles pair of Carson Haack (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) and Darin Rupp (Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt) continued its win streak with an 8-1 victory against Edgewood College. Also putting out a dominant performance, Benjamin Schutz and Eli Henderson (Andover, Minn/Andover) won 8-3 in third doubles. In a more exciting match, Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) and Jacob Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) battled intensely to an impressive 8-7 (11-9) triumph at one doubles.

Starting the singles play off with a bang, Caleb Jergenson (Livingston, Mont./Park) took care of business and secured his first collegiate win with a 6-3, 6-1 win at six singles. Clinching the match, Morrell, fresh off yet another UMAC Player of the Week honor, won his match, 6-0, 6-4. At four singles, Griffen Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) prevailed with a victory of 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. With the match clinched and restricted court time, the remaining matches competed in eight-game pro sets. The remaining three brought the Eagles to their 9-0 sweep against Edgewood. Jacob Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander), Carson Haack (Elk River, Minn./Elk River), and Benjamin Schutz all took care of their pro sets with scores of 8-4 at second singles, 8-3 at three singles, and 8-5 at five singles, respectively.

Match 2: Buena Vista University Beavers

Hungry for another win, the Eagles dominated doubles with a 3-0 start to the second match of the day. Senior captains Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) and Darin Rupp (Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt) competed together to start the match with an 8-5 victory. Griffen Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) and Carson Haack (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) cruised to an 8-1 win at second doubles. Eli Henderson (Andover, Minn/Andover) and Caleb Jergenson (Livingston, Mont./Park) were the last off the court for the men. They finished out their third doubles match with an 8-7 (7-5) win and an enthusiastic celebration.

Keeping with the theme of the eight-game pro sets, the Eagles swiftly took care of the Beavers in singles. Morrell tied the Northwestern Men's Tennis all-time combined wins record (116) with a dominant 8-1 win at first singles. The remaining Eagles followed suit with decisive wins to close out the match against Buena Vista. Jacob Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) won, 8-2, at second singles and Haack took care of his opponent, 8-2, in third singles. Jarchow's fourth singles win was a little tighter at 8-3, but Rupp dismantled his foe via an 8-0 sweep at fifth singles. Jergenson closed out the dominant effort by the Eagles with an 8-4 victory at sixth singles.

With an impressive 5-0 record, the Eagles will look to continue their win streak next Saturday, February 24th, when they face the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in Bloomington, Minnesota.
