BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - The University of Northwestern Men's Tennis team enjoyed a close-to-home match this weekend against the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The Eagles were dominant as they extended their winning streak to 6-0 via a 6-3 victory that also featured a program record.
The Eagles concluded doubles with an advantage of 2-1 over the Pointers. The duo of
Griffen Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) and
Ben Schutz (Maplewood, Minn./Homeschool) at third doubles fell to their opponents, 1-8. Next off the court at second doubles,
Darin Rupp (Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt) and
Carson Haack (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) dominated in an 8-2 win. Not only did the win at first doubles give the lead to the Eagles, but
Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) and
Jacob Weddle's (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) 8-7 (7-3) victory gave Morrell the title of winningest men's player in UNW Tennis history with 117. They completed the match with their signature chest bump in celebration of the accomplishment.
Heading into singles, the Eagles remained focused and determined; however, at third singles, Haack fell to his opponent in a tight contest of 3-6, 5-7. The Eagles refused to allow the Pointers to gain control, though. Jarchow showed perseverance in an intense battle at fourth singles. After a tight match, he eventually rose to a 7-5, 7-6 (7-0) win. At first singles, Morrell showed determination as he extended his record to 12-0 on the season with a win of 6-4, 7-5. Clinching the match for the Eagles, Weddle scored a 6-3, 6-4 win at second singles. Despite the match being clinched, the Pointers remained a tough opponent. At sixth singles, Schutz fell to his opponent 2-6, 0-6. Last on the court, Rupp closed out the match with a 7-6, 6-2 win to bring the final match score to 6-3.
The Eagles will look to continue their winning streak on Saturday, March 2nd as they face the College of St. Scholastica and Ripon College in Owatonna, Minnesota.
