WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. – Day two of the Titan Holiday Classic presented a bit more of a challenge for the University of Northwestern Women's Basketball team, as it squared off with the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, who is ranked fifth and ninth in the two Division III Women's Basketball polls. UW-Oshkosh was able to get out to a hot start offensively that propelled the Titans to a 79-35 win over the Eagles to close out the two-day event.
Oshkosh got out to a 9-0 lead before
Jasmine Sondrol (Grand Forks, N.D./Red River), who led the team in scoring Friday night, buried a three-pointer to get UNW on the board. Layups by Sondrol and
Lexi Hagen (Jordan, Minn./Jordan), who returned to the lineup after missing Friday's game, got Northwestern within four at 11-7, but UWO extended its lead back to double digits.
Ella Falk (Jamestown, N.D./Jamestown) made a layup before the end of the period, but a strong finish for the Titans gave them a 28-10 lead.
Taylor Christenson (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian Academy) scored the opening points of the second quarter, and
Grace Landvik (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) and
Reese Sellers (Yuma, Ariz./Yuma Catholic) each scored four points. Unfortunately for Northwestern, Oshkosh out-scored them 22-11 to take a 50-21 lead into the half. The Eagles went on a 5-0 run in the middle of the third period thanks to a trey from Sondrol and a Sellers layup.
Ryann Eddy (Northfield, Minn./Northfield) and
Lexi Garcia (Colorado Springs, Colo./Vanguard) each made jumpers in the quarter's closing minutes, but the Titans' offense continued to persist, giving them a 63-30 lead entering the final 10 minutes.
The scoring fell off for UNW in the fourth quarter, as the Eagles were out-scored 16-5 to close out the game. Sondrol scored four of those points and Sellers one, as UW-Oshkosh emerged with a 79-35 win. The loss dropped Northwestern to 4-5 entering Christmas.
Sondrol once again led the scoring effort for UNW with 13 points. Sellers added eight points and Landvik eight. Hagen led the Eagles in rebounding and steals with six and two, respectively. Christenson dished out a team-high four assists.
