Women's Basketball Rolls Against North Central

Roseville, Minn. –– The University of Northwestern Women's Basketball team (9-5, 2-1 UMAC) took care of business, as they defeated North Central (6-7, 2-1 UMAC) 90-54 on Saturday afternoon. 

North Central took the lead off the opening tip, and over the first four minutes the two sides traded buckets. Taylor Schuck's (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian Academy) three gave the Eagles their first lead at 9-6, and Northwestern did not trail for the rest of the game. The Eagles got the lead to eight before a Ram three-pointer got the score to 22-17 at the end of the first quarter.

The Rams got the lead down to three points at the beginning of the second quarter before Jasmine Sondrol (Grand Forks, N.D./Red River) scored the next six points for the Eagles. Schuck followed with an and-one to bring the lead back out to nine. Northwestern had a 43-31 lead at the half, carrying a twelve-point lead into halftime.

Northwestern used an incredible third quarter to put the game away. The Eagles came out firing to start the second half as Sondrol continued her excellent game with a three-pointer. Lexi Hagen (Jordan, Minn./Jordan) had a three and two free throws to extend the lead to twenty with six minutes to go in the quarter. It reached 30 at the end of the quarter as Northwestern won the quarter 28-10.

Northwestern continued to pour it on in the fourth quarter, as they went on a 16-4 run over the first six minutes to make the score 87-45. The Eagles won the contest 90-54 as they continued their quest to defend their UMAC championship. 

Jasmine Sondrol (Grand Forks, N.D./Red River) led all players, and set a career high, with 20 points on 8-11 shooting. Schuck scored 14, tying her career high, and Lexi Hagen (Jordan, Minn./Jordan) added 13 with nine boards. Six Eagles had between five and nine points as the team balanced their offensive attack. The Eagles' defense shut down the Rams' offense, which had been averaging 70 points a game.

The Eagles host UW-Superior on Friday, January 12th, as two top UMAC teams square off. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
