ST. PETER, Minn. – University of Northwestern Men's Tennis traveled to the Swanson Tennis Center to take on both Bethany Lutheran College and Martin Luther College for the first two matches of conference competition on Sunday. The Eagles earned a 7-2 win over the Vikings and a 9-0 sweep of the Knights for an undefeated start to their conference schedule.
Match One: Bethany Lutheran College
UNW earned the first two points of the match.
Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) and
Jacob Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) were the first to finish their doubles match, winning the #2 contest 8-2.
Griffen Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) and
Darin Rupp (Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt) followed with an 8-2 victory in #3 doubles. The Vikings won an 8-7 (7-5) tiebreaker victory in #1 doubles to earn a point, though Northwestern still led 2-1 heading into singles.
In the singles competition, the Eagles won five of the six matches. Weddle took the #2 match 6-1, 6-1.
Davis Pfaff (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) won his #3 singles match 6-1, 6-2.
Jack Geurkink (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory in #4 singles. Jarchow had a 6-1, 6-0 win at #5 singles.
Andy Stevenson (Fridley, Minn./Fridley) wrapped up the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win at #6 singles.
Match Two: Martin Luther College
The Eagles followed up their win over BLC with a sweep of MLC. Morrell and Weddle again started things off with an 8-0 sweep at #2 doubles. Pfaff and Geurkink followed with an 8-1 win at #1 doubles. Rupp and
Collin Hemann (Newton, Iowa/Newton) closed out the doubles matches with an 8-5 victory.
In singles, Morrell won the #1 match 6-3, 6-1. Weddle took the #2 match 6-2, 6-0. Pfaff won #3 singles 6-1, 6-1. Geurkink swept #4 singles 6-0, 6-0. Jarchow took #5 singles 6-0, 6-2. Stevenson closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win at #6 singles.
