ST. PAUL, Minn. – University of Northwestern Men's Tennis hosted their first matches at the Johnson Tennis Complex this season on Wednesday, taking on Crown College in a conference match and Hamline University in a non-conference contest. The Eagles swept the Polars 9-0 and defeated the Pipers 8-1 to improve to 11-8 overall and 3-0 in the UMAC.
Match One: Crown College Polars
Collin Hemann (Newton, Iowa/Newton) and
Darin Rupp (Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt) put UNW up 1-0 over Crown with an 8-0 sweep at #2 doubles.
Davis Pfaff (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and
Jacob Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) followed with an 8-1 win at #1 doubles.
Ben Schutz (Maplewood, Minn./Homeschool) and
Andy Stevenson (Fridley, Minn./Fridley) wrapped up a doubles sweep for Northwestern with an 8-0 sweep of their own at the #3 match.
In singles,
Griffen Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) got the fourth team point for the Eagles with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep in the #4 match.
Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) followed with a win by default at #1 singles after taking a 5-0 lead in the opening set, sealing the match win for Northwestern with the fifth team point.
Jack Geurkink (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) followed with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of #3 singles. Pfaff then won his #2 singles match 6-0, 6-1. Stevenson took #5 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep. Hemann then took the #6 singles match 6-0, 6-0 to finish the 9-0 team sweep for UNW.
Match Two: Hamline University Pipers
Against the Pipers, the Eagles again swept the three doubles matches. Pfaff and Geurkink took the #1 contest 8-2, Morrell and Weddle won #2 doubles 8-2, and Jarchow and Rupp earned an 8-6 win at #3 doubles.
In singles, Morrell won the #1 match 6-3, 6-4. Weddle earned a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) win at #2 singles. Pfaff won #3 singles 6-4, 6-2. Geurkink took #4 singles 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-3). Jarchow earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory at #5 singles as UNW won 8-1.
