SUPERIOR, Wis. – University of Northwestern Men's Tennis traveled north to take on University of Wisconsin-Superior on Thursday afternoon for their fourth conference match of the season. The Eagles were 3-0 against UMAC opponents headed into the match, but narrowly fell 5-4 to the Yellowjackets.
UNW started the match with a strong showing in doubles.
Darin Rupp (Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt) and
Griffen Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) earned the first team point of the match with an 8-4 win at #3 doubles.
Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) and
Jacob Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) put the Eagles up 2-0 with an 8-7 (7-4) tiebreaker win at #1 doubles. UW-Superior took the #2 doubles match, but Northwestern still led 2-1 heading into singles.
The Yellowjackets won the #2, #1 and #4 singles matches in that order to take a 4-2 lead in the race to five team points. Jack Geukink battled back from a 4-6 opening set loss to take the second 7-6 (9-7) to tie his #3 singles match, and proceeded to get the win from his opponent retiring in the third-set tiebreaker. UW-Superior went on to win the #5 singles match to secure the fifth team point for the team win. Nonetheless, Rupp closed out the match on a positive note for the Eagles, taking the #6 singles match 7-5, 6-4.
