ST. PAUL, Minn. – University of Northwestern Men's Tennis hosted Crown College and Martin Luther College on Monday evening for a pair of conference matches at the Johnson Tennis Complex. The Eagles swept the Polars and Knights with two 9-0 victories, improving to 5-1 in the UMAC. In addition,
Davis Pfaff (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) won his 112
th career match to become the winningest player in program history and
Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) won his 100
th career match.
Match One: Crown College Polars
UNW opened the night with a 3-0 sweep of doubles against the Polars. Pfaff and
Griffen Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) took the #1 match 8-1.
Collin Hemann (Newton, Iowa/Newton) and
Andy Stevenson (Fridley, Minn./Fridley) swept #2 doubles 9-0.
Ben Schutz (Maplewood, Minn./Homeschool) and
Eli Henderson (Andover, Minn/Andover) won #3 doubles 8-1.
In singles,
Darin Rupp (Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt) earned the fourth team point for the Eagles with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of the #3 match.
Jacob Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) clinched the team win for Northwestern with a 6-1, 6-1 win at #2 singles.
Pfaff proceeded to take #1 singles 6-1, 6-3. Hemann then won #4 singles 6-1, 6-0. Schutz followed with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of #5 singles.
Eli Henderson (Andover, Minn/Andover) closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at #6 singles.
Match Two: Martin Luther College Knights
The Eagles kept up their winning ways against the Knights with another doubles sweep. Hemann and Rupp started things off with an 8-0 sweep of #3 doubles. Pfaff and
Jack Geurkink (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) followed with another 8-0 sweep, this time in the #1 match. Morrell and Weddle wrapped up the doubles contests with an 8-1 victory in the #2 match.
In singles, Weddle won the fourth team point with a 6-0, 6-1 win at #2 singles. Morrell clinched the team win for UNW with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at #1 singles.
Stevenson followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win at #6 singles. Geurkink then swept #4 singles 6-0, 6-0. Jarchow proceeded to win #5 singles 6-0, 6-2. Pfaff closed out the night with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at #3 singles.
