Box Score MANKATO, Minn.- The University of Northwestern Softball team traveled to Mankato, Minnesota for a doubleheader with conference leading Bethany Lutheran on Tuesday night. The Eagles and the Vikings (who had not lost a conference game to this point) battled in two games that were vital to the UMAC standings. The Eagles lost game one 5-1 and the second game of the doubleheader was suspended due to darkness and the BLC's home field not having lights. The second game of the doubleheader was suspended in extra innings as the game was tied 12-12 in the eighth inning. The two teams are working to come up with a date to finish the game.
Game one of the doubleheader was scoreless through the first four innings. The Vikings would break through in the fifth and sixth innings. The Vikings played small ball in the fifth inning using a sacrifice fly, a ground ball, and a wild pitch to score their three runs. In the sixth inning, BLC delivered with two RBI singles to take a 5-0 lead.
The Eagles chipped into the lead in the top half of the seventh inning.
Kate Beer (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) hit a single through the right side that scored
Grace Bentley (Omaha, Neb./Wheaton College). UNW would not be able to get any closer and would drop the contest 5-1.
Emma Heffron (Altoona, Iowa/Grand View Christian) pitched all six innings for UNW and only gave up one earned run. She picked up five strikeouts.
