ST. PAUL, Minn. – University of Northwestern Women's Tennis hosted Bethany Lutheran College on Monday night at the Johnson Tennis Complex for their final conference match of the season. Having already locked up the UMAC North Division Regular Season Championship on Sunday, UNW looked to complete a perfect regular season in conference play. The Eagles did just that as they swept the Vikings to finish the year with an undefeated 10-0 record in the UMAC.
Prior to the match, Northwestern celebrated Senior Night. UNW senior
Taylar Smith (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) was recognized as she competes in her final season for Northwestern.
In doubles,
Rayna Baumgarn (Holmen, Wis./Holmen) and
Caitlyn Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) earned the first team point for UNW with an 8-1 victory in the #3 match. Smith and
Elli Dodge (Wahpeton, N.D./Wahpeton) then doubled the Eagles' lead with an 8-3 win at #2 doubles.
Annie Orvis (Rochester, Minn/Schaeffer Academy) and
Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) completed the doubles sweep for UNW with an 8-3 victory in the #1 match.
In singles,
Analise Marquardt (Parkers Prairie, Minn./Parkers Prairie) earned the fourth team point for Northwestern with a 6-0, 6-1 win at #5 singles. Smith clinched the team win for the Eagles on her senior night with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at #4 singles for the match-deciding fifth team point.
Match in hand, the Eagles went on to win the remaining four matches to complete the 9-0 team sweep. Orvis swept her #1 singles match 6-0, 6-0.
Domiano Baideme (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) won #2 singles 6-2, 6-2.
Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) took #3 singles 6-1, 6-0. Dodge earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at #6 singles.
Up next, Northwestern will begin postseason play in the UMAC Tournament. First up is a semifinal match against Webster University: the No. 2 seed in the Southern Division. The Eagles will battle the Gorloks on Friday, April 28 starting at 6:30pm in the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus.
