ST. PAUL, Minn. – University of Northwestern Women's Tennis hosted their first matches at the Johnson Tennis Complex this season on Wednesday, taking on Crown College in a conference match and Hamline University in a non-conference contest. The Eagles swept the Polars 9-0 and defeated the Pipers 8-1 to improve to 9-8 overall and 3-0 in the UMAC.
Match One: Crown College Polars
UNW opened their conference match against Crown with three 8-0 doubles sweeps.
Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) and
Analise Marquardt (Parkers Prairie, Minn./Parkers Prairie) took #1 doubles,
Taylar Smith (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) and
Elli Dodge (Wahpeton, N.D./Wahpeton) took #2 doubles, and
Caitlyn Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) and
Rayna Baumgarn (Holmen, Wis./Holmen) took #3 doubles.
Up 3-0 headed into singles, the Eagles continued to find great success on the court.
Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) won #4 singles 6-1, 6-0 to get the fourth team point for UNW.
Annie Orvis (Rochester, Minn/Schaeffer Academy) followed with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at #1 singles to clinch the team match for Northwestern with the fifth team point.
Domiano Baideme (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) followed with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at #2 singles. Baumgarn then swept her #4 singles opponent 6-0, 6-0. Dodge won her #5 singles match 6-0, 6-1. Swigart completed the 9-0 team sweep for the Eagles with a 6-1, 6-1 win at #6 singles.
Match Two: Hamline University Pipers
The Eagles opened their non-conference match against Hamline with a sweep of the three doubles matches. Baideme and Jarchow started with an 8-3 win at #2 doubles. Orvis and Johnson followed with an 8-5 win at #1 doubles. Smith and Marquardt completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win in the #3 match.
In singles, the Eagles won five of the six matches to earn an 8-1 team victory. Orvis took #1 singles 7-5, 6-0. Baideme won #2 singles 6-4, 6-4. Johnson was up 6-3, 4-0 before her opponent retired. Smith won 6-3, 7-5 in #4 singles. Marquardt won the eighth team point with a 6-1, 6-1 at #6 singles.
