SAINT PETER, Minn.- After a week filled with speculation about weather and field conditions, the University of Northwestern Baseball team was able to turn a home game into a road game and travel down to Saint Peter, Minnesota on Friday where they played against Gustavus Adolphus. The Gusties won the contest 9-0.
Brandon Welch (Rogers, Minn./Rogers) got the start on the mound for the Eagles and got off to a very efficient start. Welch only needed five pitches to get through the first inning and pitched a scoreless second inning as well. Welch continued to pitch well into the third inning when an error extended the inning. The Gusties cashed in with a two run homerun over the left field fence to take a 2-0 lead.
The Gusties got RBI singles in each the fourth and fifth innings to extend their lead to 4-0. A two run seventh inning and a three run eighth inning featuring a two run double gave the Gusties the 9-0 win.
The Eagles were not able to push across a run as the Gusties got six shutout innings from their starting pitcher and three more strong innings from their bullpen.
Bryce Crabb (Des Moines, Iowa/Grand View Christian) hit leadoff for the Eagles and did his job at the top of the order getting on base three times thanks to a base hit and two walks.
Daniel Peterson (Burlington, Wis./Burlington),
Isaac Pilon (Robbinsdale, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong), and
Gilbert Garcia Jr. (Stockton, Cali./Saint Mary's) accounted for the other Eagle hits in the contest.
