OWATONNA, Minn. – University of Northwestern Women's Tennis took on Wartburg College and Morningside University on Saturday in a pair of non-conference matches. The Eagles narrowly fell 5-4 to the Knights in the morning and later fell 9-0 to the Mustangs in the evening.
Match One: Wartburg College Knights
Northwestern jumped ahead 2-1 in the opening doubles matches in their battle against Wartburg.
Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) and
Analise Marquardt (Parkers Prairie, Minn./Parkers Prairie) won their #2 doubles match 8-5.
Taylar Smith (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) and
Elli Dodge (Wahpeton, N.D./Wahpeton) took the #3 doubles match in a clean 8-0 sweep. The Knights earned one doubles point with the #1 match, but the Eagles nonetheless took a lead into the singles matches.
In singles, the Eagles won two of the six matches. Smith rallied to earn a hard-fought 3-6, 6-0, (10-3) tiebreaker win at #4 singles for UNW. Marquardt won #5 singles 7-5, 6-1 for the fourth Northwestern point, but the Knights took the remaining four matches to clinch the match by the narrowest margin at 5-4.
Match Two: Morningside University Mustangs
In the evening match, the Mustangs won each of the three doubles matches. Morningside took #3 doubles 8-1, #2 doubles 8-2, and #1 doubles 8-1.
The singles matches also went the way of Morningside as they won all six. The Mustangs earned their fourth team point with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #3 singles and then clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-2 win at #1 singles.
