WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. – University of Northwestern Women's Tennis traveled over to Life Time Fitness in White Bear Lake to take on Saint Mary's University on Friday night. The Eagles defeated the Cardinals in a 7-2 final, picking up their first win of the season.
UNW started the match strong with two wins in the doubles competition.
Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) and
Analise Marquardt (Parkers Prairie, Minn./Parkers Prairie) picked up an 8-7 win at #2 doubles. The duo of
Taylar Smith (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) and
Elli Dodge (Wahpeton, N.D./Wahpeton) took the #3 match 8-3 to send Northwestern into the singles matches with a 2-1 lead.
Needing only three wins in singles to clinch the match win, the Eagles took the top five matches to win a decisive 7-2 team victory.
Annie Orvis (Rochester, Minn/Schaeffer Academy) rallied to win her #1 match 0-6, 6-2, (10-5).
Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win at #2 singles. Jarchow earned a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, (10-7) win in the #3 match. Marquardt won #4 singles 6-2, 6-3. Smith rounded out the Eagles' singles victories with a 6-1, 6-0 win in the #5 match.
Up next, Northwestern will head to Life Time Fitness in Bloomington next Saturday, February 25 for an 11:30 a.m. match against Saint Scholastica.
