ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern Women's Soccer team took a break from UMAC play on Thursday for a non-conference date with Gustavus Adolphus College. Battling heavy winds on top of a strong MIAC opponent, the Eagles fell by a 3-0 score.
Freshman goalkeeper
Samantha Hansen (Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) put on a show in the first half, making 10 saves before Gustavus finally broke through with goal in the 40
th minute. Northwestern had a couple of chances in front of the net of their own in the first half, but weren't able to capitalize. The home team added two late goals to make the scoring margin larger than it felt like for most of the contest. Hansen finished the day with a career-high 15 saves.
Megan Kohrt (Monona, Wis./Homeschool) led the Eagles' offensive efforts, firing six shots and five shots on goal.
Megan Moeller (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Christian School) added four shots, two of them being on goal. The electrifying
Haley Mersberger (Kiel, Wisc./Elkhart Lake Glenbeulah) was limited to just one shot on goal as the Gusties' defense keyed in on UNW's leading scorer.
Mya Chan (Brandon, S.D./Homeschool) logged a shot on goal as well.
Northwestern will resume UMAC play on Saturday, where they still hold a four-game conference winning streak active. Next up on the schedule is a rematch with the Crown College Polars, who UNW defeated at Reynolds Field earlier in the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
