ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. – The University of Northwestern Women's Soccer team was back in action Saturday, eager to move on from its 3-0 loss at Gustavus Adolphus on Thursday. The Eagles entered the matchup with Crown College still carrying a four-game winning streak in UMAC play. Unfortunately, that streak would end at Old National Bank Stadium after a 1-1 draw.
After a scoreless first half, Northwestern was gifted a penalty kick in the 49
th minute.
Megan Moeller's (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Christian School) shot was saved by the Crown goalkeeper, but UNW kept at it. Just two minutes later, Moeller booted a perfect, high-arcing pass just over the Crown keeper's arms and off the head of
Haley Mersberger (Kiel, Wisc./Elkhart Lake Glenbeulah), into the net.
Crown, wanting to avenge a 2-0 loss at Reynolds Field last month, was able to pull even in the 61
st minute. Despite several UNW shots on goal in the final 29 minutes, the 1-1 score would be the final.
Northwestern had plenty of chances, out-shooting the Polars 22-6 and 13-5 on goal in the match. They also had nine corner kicks while holding Crown to zero.
Megan Kohrt (Monona, Wis./Homeschool) provided seven of those shots and four of the shots on goal. Moeller contributed six shots, four of which were on goal, while Mersberger added five shots and four on goal.
Mya Chan (Brandon, S.D./Homeschool) and
Elle Bush (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) each logged a shot on goal as well.
Samantha Hansen (Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) tallied four saves.
Northwestern will be back in action Wednesday at Reynolds Field, hosting the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets. The Jackets are undefeated in UMAC play and are atop the conference standings. Kickoff is slated for 4:30 PM.
