Women’s Basketball Stays Undefeated in UMAC with 71-57 Victory Over Bethany Lutheran at Hoops Hysteria

ST. PAUL, Minn. – University of Northwestern Women's Basketball hosted Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday afternoon for a conference contest in the Ericksen Center for the Eagles' Hoops Hysteria game. The Eagles improved their undefeated UMAC record to 5-0 with a 71-57 victory over the Vikings.
 
Northwestern set the tone in the opening quarter by scoring 19 points and holding the Vikings to just seven. The Eagles shot 40.0 percent from the field in the opening half while holding BLC to 27.3 percent on 3-of-11 shooting.
 
The Eagles offense cooled down in the second quarter, making 3-of-15 from the field. Their defense, however, stayed strong, limiting the Vikings to just 2-of-11 shooting. Both teams scored nine points in the quarter as Northwestern headed to halftime with a 28-16 lead.
 
After halftime, both team's offenses started to click. After the Eagles and Vikings combined to score 44 points in the first 20 minutes, they went on to score 84 points in the final 20 minutes.
 
UNW had their highest scoring quarter in the third as they went 9-for-16 (56.3 percent) from the field and made 5-of-6 (83.3 percent) from beyond the arc. Bethany Lutheran's offense came alive in the third as well, scoring 20 points to keep pace with Northwestern, though the Vikings still trailed by 16 points after their first-half struggles.
 
Leading 52-36, the Eagles looked to close out the game strong. UNW scored 19 points in the final frame, making 6-of-10 (60.0 percent) from the field. BLC had their best scoring quarter of the game with 21 points, but the Eagles lead allowed Northwestern to glide to a 71-57 conference win.
 
Lexi Hagen (Jordan, Minn./Jordan) and Taylor Schuck (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian Academy) each scored 11 points for the Eagles. Hagen added six rebounds and two blocks. Schuck tied for the team lead with three assists. River Landers (Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow) went 5-for-5 from the floor for a 10-point game and led UNW with seven rebounds.
 
Up next, Northwestern will travel to Wisconsin to take on the UW-Superior Yellowjackets in a conference battle on Friday, January 20, at 7:15 P.M. in Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium. The Eagles will next play at home on February 10.
