ST. PAUL, Minn.- The University of Northwestern Men's Soccer Team played their second game in three days on Saturday evening and picked up their second win in three days as well. The Eagles hosted the Cougars from the University of Minnesota-Morris on Saturday in what was a rain-filled, yet exciting atmosphere on Homecoming Saturday. UNW performed well in the midst Homecoming, winning 4-1.
Unlike their win on Thursday evening, the Eagles struck first in the contest.
Curtis Tinjum (Wausau, Wisc./Wausau West) was the man of the night as the freshman had the best game of his young collegiate career so far, and he got things started in the 11
th minute. The freshman scored an unassisted goal which was the first of his season and career. The Eagles took an early 1-0 lead.
UNW would hold onto that lead throughout a rainy first half and would lead 1-0 at the halftime break. In the second half, Tinjum made another mark on the contest. It did not take long for the freshman to get the second goal of his career as he knocked another one in around the 56 minute mark. This goal came off of a perfect display of team soccer as
Aaron Hill (New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View) got the ball up to
Jonathan-Thomas Olsen (Modesto, Calif./James Enochs High) who streaked up the right sideline and delivered a beautiful pass to Tinjum who finished off the play. The Eagles led 2-0.
In the 68
th minute, the Cougars would spoil the shutout and get a goal to cut the Eagles' lead to 2-1. This goal from the visitors forced the Eagles to search for some insurance goals in the final twenty plus minutes of the game. The Eagles found the insurance they were searching for, once again thanks to
Curtis Tinjum (Wausau, Wisc./Wausau West).
David DeLoye (Wausau, Wisc./Wausau West) had the ball in the box, went down, recovered, got back up, delivered the ball to the middle of the field where Tinjum was waiting for it, and Tinjum completed the hat trick as his teammates ran to congratulate him.
In the 86
th minute, it was
Jonathan-Thomas Olsen (Modesto, Calif./James Enochs High) who, for the second consecutive game, delivered the final nail in the coffin for the Eagles. After receiving a pass, Olsen made a beautiful move to create separation from the defense, and put his shot in the top right corner of the net where the goalie could not reach it. The Eagles won the game 4-1.
UNW will have very little time to cherish this victory as they hit the road on Monday, September 26
th and travel to Storm Lake, Iowa to take on the Buena Vista Beavers at 5:30 P.M.
