ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team hosted the Martin Luther College Knights on Saturday evening at Life Time Fitness in White Bear Lake. The Eagles swept the Knights to improve to 19-5 on the year and bring this squad within one win of the single-season program record of 20 wins set by last year's team.
In doubles, the #1 duo of
Adam Ryerse (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) and
Jack Geurkink (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) swept the match 8-0.
Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) and
Jacob Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) added another 8-0 sweep to the scoresheet.
Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) and
Darin Rupp (Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt) closed out doubles with an 8-2 win for the Eagles.
In singles, Morrell flew to a 6-0, 6-0 win at the top match. Ryerse clinched a 6-0, 6-3 win in the #2 match. Weddle won #3 singles 6-0, 6-2. Geurkink earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at #4 singles. Isaac Velgersyk took the #5 singles match 6-1, 6-2.
Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) won #6 singles 6-0, 6-0 as the Eagles closed out the 9-0 sweep of the Knights.
Up next for Northwestern is their regular season finale at 4:00 P.M. this Sunday, May 1, at Life Time Fitness in White Bear Lake. The Eagles will take on the UW-Superior Yellowjackets.
