MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team drove to the University of Minnesota Morris on Thursday for a conference contest with the Cougars. The Eagles took down the Cougars 8-1 to improve to 18-5 overall with a 5-1 record in conference play.
In doubles,
Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) and
Jacob Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) swept their #2 match 8-0 to give UNW the early lead.
Adam Ryerse (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) and
Jack Geurkink (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) followed with an 8-1 win at #1 doubles.
Darin Rupp (Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt) and
Collin Hemann (Newton, Iowa/Newton) completed the doubles sweep for Northwestern with an 8-2 win in the #3 match.
Up 3-0, the Eagles earned a fourth team point as Morrell won the #1 singles match 6-1, 6-1. Weddle clinched the match the UNW with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #2 singles.
Match in hand, Northwestern added three more wins to the scoresheet. Geurkink took the #3 singles match 6-1, 6-0. Rupp followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win at #4 singles. Hemann won the #5 singles match 6-1, 6-1.
Morris managed to fend off an Eagles sweep with a win at #6 singles, but Northwestern nonetheless won the day 8-1.
