SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team traveled up to the University of Wisconsin-Superior to take on the Yellowjackets in a conference match on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles fell to the Yellowjackets 5-4 in the contest.
In doubles, UWS jumped ahead 1-0 with a win in the #1 match.
Darin Rupp (Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt) and
Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) answered with an 8-6 win at #3 doubles to even the match at 1-1. The Yellowjackets earned a narrow 8-7 (7-2) win at #2 doubles to take a 2-1 advantage into singles.
UW-Superior went ahead 3-1 with a #2 singles win.
Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) proceeded to cut Northwestern's deficit in half with a 6-3, 6-1 win at #1 singles.
Jacob Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at #3 singles to tie the match up at 3-3.
With six matches in the books and the score tied, it became a best-of-three contest. The Yellowjackets gained a 4-3 lead with a 7-5, 6-1, 1-0 (10-4) win at #4 singles. Studer won #6 singles for the Eagles to tie the contest up once more at 4-4.
The winner-take-all match fell to #5 singles. The Yellowjackets earned a 7-6 (7-4) tiebreaker win in the first set and followed with a 7-5 win in the second to take the both the singles match and the team match for UW-Superior.
Up next for Northwestern is a quick turnaround as they travel to the University of Minnesota Morris on Thursday, April 28, for an 11:00 A.M. conference match against the Cougars.
