ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team hosted the Hamline University Pipers for a non-conference match at the Johnson Tennis Complex on Tuesday evening. The Eagles defeated the Pipers 8-1 to win their 14
th consecutive match on the season, improving their overall record to 15-3.
In doubles, UNW started up a point as Hamline was forced to forfeit a match due to only fielding four athletes. Up 1-0 out the gate,
Belinda Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) and
Annie Orvis (Rochester, Minn/Schaeffer Academy) doubled Northwestern's lead with an 8-1 win at #1 doubles.
Taylar Smith (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) and
Elli Dodge (Wahpeton, N.D./Wahpeton) completed a doubles sweep for the Eagles with an 8-3 win in the #2 match.
Up 3-0 after doubles, the Eagles were immediately granted the team victory upon the start of singles play. Due to only fielding four athletes, Hamline had to forfeit two singles matches, giving the Eagles their fourth and fifth points to clinch the match victory.
With the team win in hand, the Eagles continued their strong play by winning three of the four remaining singles matches. Weddle won her #1 singles match 6-3, 6-2. Hamline responded with a super tiebreaker win at #2 singles to earn a team point, ending the Eagles streak of consecutive team matches won by 9-0 sweep at six.
Nonetheless, Jarchow followed with a 6-2, 7-5 win at #3 singles. Analise Marquard closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win at #4 singles to set the final score as 8-1, Eagles.
Up next for Northwestern is a trip up to Superior, Wisconsin to take on the Yellowjackets in a conference contest this Wednesday, April 27, at 3:00 P.M.
