Eagles Win 15th In-A-Row as Women’s Tennis Takes Down Yellowjackets

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team traveled up to the University of Wisconsin-Superior to take on the Yellowjackets in a conference match on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles defeated the Yellowjackets 7-2 to win their 15th in-a-row, a winning streak that dates back to March 7. The win improved UNW to 16-3 overall and maintained their perfect conference record of 5-0.

In doubles, Belinda Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) and Annie Orvis (Rochester, Minn/Schaeffer Academy) started the day off strong for the Eagles with an 8-3 win in the #1 match. Taylar Smith (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) and Elli Dodge (Wahpeton, N.D./Wahpeton) followed with an 8-4 win at #2 doubles. Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) and Analise Marquardt (Parkers Prairie, Minn./Parkers Prairie) completed a clean doubles sweep for UNW with an 8-2 win in the #3 match.

Up 3-0 after doubles, Northwestern looked to close out the match in singles. The Yellowjackets were not going to go quietly and opened singles play with a super tiebreaker win in the #3 match to cut the Eagles lead to two team points.

Still leading 3-1, UNW earned a fourth point at #6 singles where Marquardt won 6-0, 6-4. One point away from defeat, the Yellowjackets held on by winning #1 singles 6-3, 6-2.

Up 4-2, Dodge clinched the team win for Northwestern with a hard-fought 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 1-0 (10-4) win at #4 singles, preserving the Eagles perfect 5-0 UMAC record and taking lone possession of first place in the conference standings over the 5-1 Yellowjackets.

With the team win secured, Northwestern proceeded to sweep the remaining singles matches. Orvis won her #2 match 6-2, 6-0 and Jarchow took #5 singles 6-4, 6-2.

Up next for Northwestern is a quick turnaround as they travel to the University of Minnesota Morris on Thursday, April 28, for an 11:00 A.M. conference match against the Cougars.
