Eagles Take Top Three Singles Matches as Men's Tennis Falls to Johnnies

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team hosted the Saint John's Johnnies on Thursday evening at the Johnson Tennis Complex. The Eagles won the top three singles matches but ultimately fell to the Johnnies 6-3 in the non-conference contest.

In doubles, the Johnnies took the #1 and #3 matches 8-1. The #2 doubles match was closely contested all the way through as both teams held off numerous match points in an epic super tiebreaker. In the end, the Johnnies outlasted the Eagles to take the tiebreaker 16-14 for the 8-7 match win.

In singles, the Johnnies clinched the match with wins at #5 and #6 singles. Though the match was out of reach, the Eagles kept up the fight; winning three points in the top three matches in three super tiebreakers.

Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) earned the first UNW point with a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) win in the #1 singles match. Adam Ryerse (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) rallied down a set for a second UNW point with a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) win at #2 singles.
