SHEBOYGAN, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team traveled to Wisconsin this past weekend to compete in matches against the Milwaukee School of Engineering Raiders and the Marian University Muskies. The Eagles won both matches to improve to 16-4 on the season.
Match One: Eagles 7, Raiders 2
Northwestern opened their road trip against MSOE in Racine on Friday. The Raiders opened the match with a pair of doubles wins to take an early 2-1 lead over the Eagles. Though they dropped two matches, UNW took the #3 doubles match 8-4 over MSOE.
Trailing 2-1 after doubles, the Eagles rallied to win all six singles matches and defeat the Raiders 7-2.
Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) won #1 singles 6-4, 6-4.
Adam Ryerse (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) took #2 singles 6-4, 6-1.
Jacob Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) won #3 singles 6-1, 6-0. At #4 singles,
Jack Geurkink (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) won 6-1, 6-0. #5 singles went to
Isaac Velgersdyk (Savage, Minn./Southwest Christian) 6-1, 6-1.
Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) closed out #6 singles 6-1, 6-0.
Match Two: Eagles 9, Sabres 0
On Saturday, the Eagles took on the Marian Sabres in Sheboygan. Northwestern fared better in doubles than their Friday match, taking all three to go up 3-0. Studer and Fremling took the #3 match 8-0, Velgersdyk and Darrin Rupp won the #2 match 8-2, then Geurkink and Ryerse won the #1 match 8-1.
In singles, Studer won the fourth team point with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #4 singles. Velgersdyk then clinched the team victory with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at #3 singles. The Eagles proceeded to win the remaining four matches to sweep the Sabres 9-0.
