NEW ULM, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team took on the Martin Luther College Knights on Monday in a road conference match at the MLC Tennis Courts. The Eagles remained undefeated in conference matches as UNW swept MLC 9-0 to improve to 4-0 in the UMAC standings and 36-0 in total singles and doubles matches played against conference opponents.
In doubles, the #1 duo of
Belinda Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) and
Annie Orvis (Rochester, Minn/Schaeffer Academy) earned an 8-1 win for the Eagles.
Taylar Smith (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) and
Elli Dodge (Wahpeton, N.D./Wahpeton) followed with an 8-6 win in their #2 doubles contest.
Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) and
Analise Marquardt (Parkers Prairie, Minn./Parkers Prairie) completed a doubles sweep for UNW with an 8-6 win in the #3 match.
Up 3-0 going into singles play, the Eagles kept up their momentum. Weddle won her #1 singles match 6-3, 6-2 for the fourth team point. Smith clinched the match for UNW with a clean 6-0, 6-0 sweep in her #3 singles match.
The wins kept on coming for the Eagles even after securing the match victory. Orvis took a 6-1, 6-2 win in the #2 match. Dodge, the reigning UMAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week, won her #4 match in a 6-2, 6-1 final. Jarchow earned a 6-2, 6-3 win in the #5 spot. Marquardt closed out the sweep for Northwestern with a 6-2, 6-4 win at #6 singles.
With the match victory, the Eagles improved to 11-3 overall on the season to go along with their perfect conference record.
Up next for the Eagles is a trip up to Wisconsin to take on UW-Superior at 3:30 P.M. next Tuesday, April 19.
