NEW ULM, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team battled the Martin Luther College Knights on Monday in a conference contest at the MLC Tennis Courts. The Eagles left New Ulm victorious with an 8-1 win over the Knights, improving to 14-3 overall and staying undefeated in the UMAC at 4-0.
In doubles,
Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) and
Jacob Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) earned the first point for UNW with an 8-2 win in the #2 match.
Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) and
Darin Rupp (Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt) followed with an 8-2 win at #3 doubles.
Adam Ryerse (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) and
Jack Geurkink (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) closed out the doubles competition with an 8-2 win at the #1 match.
Up 3-0, the Eagles continued their success in singles. Weddle earned the fourth Northwestern point with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep in the #3 match. Morrell secured the win for UNW with a 6-0, 6-2 win at #1 singles for decisive fifth team point.
MLC won the #6 singles match for their first point, but with the Eagles having already secured the match it was too little too late. Ryerse followed with a 6-0, 6-3 win at the #2 match for UNW.
Isaac Velgersdyk (Savage, Minn./Southwest Christian) swept his #5 opponent 6-0, 6-0. Geurkink closed out the match with one more Northwestern win, taking the #4 match 6-2, 6-4.
Up next for the Eagles is a trip up to Wisconsin to take on UW-Superior next Tuesday, April 19.
