Women’s Tennis Sweeps Mighty Macs 9-0, Completes 8-1 Win Over Monarchs

ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team completed their final day of Florida competition by winning 13 of 14 matches played on Friday. The Eagles took down the Immaculata University Mighty Macs on Friday in a 9-0 sweep. Right afterwards, UNW had the opportunity to complete their unfinished match with King's College from Monday and earned an 8-1 victory over the Monarchs.

Match One: Eagles vs. Mighty Macs

In the doubles competition, the duo of Taylar Smith (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) and Ellie Dodge opened the scoring with an 8-2 win at the #2 match. The freshman combo of Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) and Caitlyn Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) doubled the Eagle lead with an identical 8-2 win at #3 Doubles. Northwestern closed out the doubles matches with an 8-4 win at the #1 contest by Belinda Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) and Annie Orvis (Rochester, Minn/Schaeffer Academy).

Up 3-0 headed into singles, the Eagles didn't slow down. Jarchow earned the fourth point with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at #5 Singles. Smith clinched the match-winning fifth point with a 6-1, 6-1 win at #3 Singles. Orvis followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at the #2 spot. Dodge added a 6-2, 6-2 win in the #4 match. Weddle won the top match in a 6-4, 6-0 victory at #1 Singles. Analise Marquardt (Parkers Prairie, Minn./Parkers Prairie) closed out 9-0 match sweep with a 6-4, 6-3 win at #6 Singles.

Match Two: Eagles vs. Monarchs (Pt. II)

The Eagles entered their match with the Monarchs on Friday up 3-0 in the contest after having swept the doubles competition before rain postponed the match on Monday. UNW kept up the momentum from their win over Immaculata earlier to take five of the six singles matches over King's.

Marquardt opened part two of the competition with a 6-0, 6-1 win at #6 Singles. Smith followed to once again earn the match-clinching fifth point for Northwestern, taking her #3 match 6-1, 6-2. Orvis added another singles win against the Monarchs with a 6-2, 6-0 win in the #2 match. Jarchow followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win in the #5 spot. The Monarchs prevented another Eagle sweep with a win at #4 Singles, but it would be all they would get as UNW's Weddle would win the final match 6-3, 7-6 at #1 Singles to complete the 8-1 team victory.
