LAKEVILLE, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team traveled to Lakeville to battle the Wartburg College Knights and the Ripon College Red Hawks on Saturday. The Eagles won both matches, defeated the Knights 5-4 and the Red Hawks 8-1.
Match One: Eagles vs. Knights
In doubles, UNW fell behind 2-0 as Wartburg took the #1 and #2 matches. The duo of
Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) and
Analise Marquardt (Parkers Prairie, Minn./Parkers Prairie) earned the final doubles point for Northwestern with an 8-5 victory in the #3 match.
Down 2-1 heading in the singles, the Eagles rallied to win two points to take a 3-2 lead.
Taylar Smith (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) won her #3 match 6-1, 6-0 and Marquardt followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win in her #6 match.
The Knights battled back to win the next two points in #1 and #2 singles, retaking the lead at 4-3 and drawing within one point of winning.
With their backs to the wall, the Eagles rallied.
Elli Dodge (Wahpeton, N.D./Wahpeton) earned a 6-2, 6-4 win in her #4 match to even the contest at 4-4.
The winner-take-all match fell to #5 singles, where Jarchow rallied after dropping her first set to win the second and clinch the match victory with a gutsy tiebreaker win in a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-5) final.
Match Two: Eagles vs. Ripon
In doubles, UNW earned two victories to start out 2-0.
Belinda Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) and
Annie Orvis (Rochester, Minn/Schaeffer Academy) swept their #1 match 8-0 while Smith and Dodge likewise swept their #2 match 8-0. The Red Hawks prevented the sweep with an 8-2 win at the #3 match.
Up 2-1, the Eagles slammed the door with a 6-0 sweep of the singles matches. Smith won her #3 match 7-6, 6-2. Orvis followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win at #2 singles. Weddle secured the match-clinching fifth point with a 4-6, 7-5, 12-10 win in her #1 singles match.
UNW closed out their singles sweep with Jarchow's 6-0, 6-4 win at #5, Dodge's 6-3, 6-1 win at #4, and Marquardt's 6-0, 6-0 sweep at the #6 match.
