ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team finished their Florida trip on Friday with a pair of wins. The Eagles cruised to a 9-0 sweep over the Monmouth Fighting Scots before breaking out the brooms again for a 9-0 win over the Immaculata Mighty Macs.
Match One: Eagles vs. Fighting Scots
UNW started strong in doubles with a 3-0 sweep.
Jacob Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) and
Darin Rupp (Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt) won 8-0 at the #2 Doubles match.
Adam Ryerse (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) and
Jack Geurkink (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) followed up at #1 Singles with an 8-3 victory.
Collin Hemann (Newton, Iowa/Newton) and
Joel Fremling (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) closed out doubles with an 8-1 win for UNW in the #3 match.
Singles continued the Eagle domination. Rupp swept his #4 Singles match 6-0, 6-0 for the fourth team point. Fremling clinched the match win with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep in the #5 match for the fifth point.
Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at #1 Singles. Hemann followed with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at #6 Singles. Velgersdyk cruised to a 6-1 first set win and clinched his #3 match in a 7-5 second set win. Geurkink closed out the 9-0 Eagle sweep with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-0) win at #2 Singles.
Match Two: Eagles vs. Mighty Macs
In the opening doubles competition, the Eagles won every game in a 24-0 run.
Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) and Velgersdyk teamed up for the 8-0 win at #2 Doubles for the first team point.
Zack Revenig (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) and
Eli Henderson (Andover, Minn/Andover) took #3 Doubles 8-0. Morrell and Weddle completed the perfect doubles run with a final 8-0 win in the #1 match.
Northwestern continued to roll in the singles matches. Revenig swept #5 Singles 6-0, 6-0. Henderson earned the fifth point with a #6 Singles 6-0, 6-0 sweep. Fremling followed up with a third consecutive 6-0, 6-0 win for UNW in the #3 Singles. Hemann took #4 Singles 6-1, 6-1. Studer won #2 Singles 6-3, 6-0. Weddle closed out the dominant day for the Eagles with a final win, clinching #1 Singles 6-1, 6-3.
