LAKEVILLE, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team took on the Wartburg College Knights and the Ripon College Red Hawks on Saturday. The Eagles fell to the Knights 6-3 but bounced back with a 9-0 sweep over the Red Hawks.
Match One: Eagles vs. Knights
Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) and
Jacob Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) earned the lone doubles point in the match with an 8-6 win at the No. 2 match.
In singles, Morrell earned a hard fought 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5) win at the No. 1 match.
Jack Geurkink (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) won his No. 4 match 6-3, 7-5 to earn UNW a third point, but the Eagles fell to Wartburg 6-3.
Match Two: Eagles vs. Ripon
In doubles,
Collin Hemann (Newton, Iowa/Newton) and
Darin Rupp (Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt) teamed up to win the #3 match 8-1. Morrell and Weddle followed with an 8-2 win at the #2 match.
Adam Ryerse (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) and Geurkink closed out a UNW sweep of the doubles competition with an 8-4 win in the #1 match.
Up 3-0, the Eagles continued to dominate in the singles competition. Weddle earned a fourth team point for UNW with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of his #3 match.
Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) clinched the match for Northwestern by winning his #5 match 6-3, 6-0 to win the deciding fifth team point.
Joel Fremling (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) won his #6 match by withdrawal of his opponent when Joel led 6-3, 5-1. Morrell won his #1 match 6-2, 6-2. Ryerse followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win at the #2 match.
Isaac Velgersdyk (Savage, Minn./Southwest Christian) completed the 9-0 match sweep for UNW with a 6-2, 6-4 win in the #4 match.
