Women’s Basketball Soars to 77-25 Win Over Maranatha Baptist

HANCOCK, Mich. – University of Northwestern Women's Basketball traveled to Finlandia University for a neutral site game against Maranatha Baptist University on Friday afternoon. The Eagles dominated on both ends of the court, taking a 51-9 lead by halftime and ultimately a 77-25 win over the Sabercats.
 
UNW's shooting was white-hot out the gate. The Eagles scored 30 points in the opening quarter on 70.6 percent shooting from the field. Northwestern added four three-point buckets on 50.0 percent shooting. Defensively, the Eagles held the Sabercats to nine points on a 33.3 percent clip from the field in the first quarter, taking a 21-point lead in the first 10 minutes.
 
In the second quarter, the Eagles made half their shots to score 20 points. The UNW defense shut out the Sabercats in the same quarter, with Maranatha going 0-for-13 from the field. At the half, Northwestern led 51-9 over the Sabercats.
 
After halftime, the Eagles went right back to work. UNW scored 20 points in the third frame, shooting 47.1 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from beyond the arc. The Sabercats scored four points in the quarter on 2-of-11 shooting. At the end of the third quarter, Northwestern had increased their lead to 58 points with a 77-14 lead.
 
Northwestern added six points in the final quarter en route to their 77-25 victory over the Sabercats.
 
Andrea Pocernich (Cromwell, Minn./Cromwell-Wright) led the Eagles with 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field in 24 minutes off the bench, adding seven rebounds and four steals in her first collegiate game. Livvy Grosz (New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony) scored a career high 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting and added five rebounds. Jasmine Sondrol (Grand Forks, N.D./Red River) had 11-points and seven rebounds; both career highs.
 
The Eagles shot 49.3 percent from the field and 30.4 percent from three-point range in the win. UNW held Maranatha to a 21.4 percent clip from the field and 9.1 percent from beyond the arc.
 
Up next, Northwestern will face off against host Finlandia on Saturday at 3:00 P.M. Central, 4:00 P.M. Eastern.
