DULUTH, Minn.- The University of Northwestern Men's Basketball team traveled to Duluth for a road contest with the College of Saint Scholastica on Wednesday night. The Eagles suffered their first loss of the season, falling 70-62.
In the first half, the Eagles struggled to find the touch from the outside shooting 13% (2-15) from the three point line. The Saints took advantage, building a 36-27 lead at the halftime break. St. Scholastica rode six first half three pointers and were 6-6 from the free throw line en route to building the lead.
UNW responded in the second half, immediately cutting into the Saints' lead. A layup by Micah Pocernich (Cromwell, Minn./Cromwell-Wright) cut the Eagles' deficit to 41-39 nearly five minutes into the final half. The two teams would then trade buckets over the next three minutes, before a Seth Fuqua (Colorado Springs, Colo./The Vanguard School) jumper gave the Eagles their first lead of the second half, 48-47. Two free throws from Caleb Hoilien (Minneapolis, Minn./Hope Academy) pushed the lead to three, but it was the Saints' turn to respond and start chipping away at a deficit. With 6:40 left in the contest, the Saints recovered the lead, but a Pocernich three pointer put UNW back up 59-57. CSS would tie the game at 59 apiece with a layup with 4:35 remaining. The Saints out scored the Eagles 11-3 in the final minutes to grab the victory on their home floor.
Seth Fuqua (Colorado Springs, Colo./The Vanguard School) led UNW with 21 points, while Micah Pocernich (Cromwell, Minn./Cromwell-Wright) (14) and Caleb Hoilien (Minneapolis, Minn./Hope Academy) (13) were each in double figures scoring as well.
The Eagles will have a couple days to recover, but are right back in action on Saturday, November 19th when they travel to UW-Eau Claire to take on the Blugolds. Tipoff is set for 5:00 PM.
