ASHLAND, Wisc.- The University of Northwestern Women's Soccer team got back on track on Saturday afternoon when they made the long trip to Northland College where they defeated the Lumberjills 2-0. The Eagles improved to 4-1-2 in UMAC play.
The biggest story of the afternoon was the freshman who continued her incredible first year for the Eagles.
Haley Mersberger (Kiel, Wisc./Elkhart Lake Glenbeulah), the reigning UMAC Player of the Week, scored both goals for UNW to win the contest. The goals were the freshman's 9
th and 10
th goals of the season which lead the team. Mersberger's first goal of the game came in just the 6
th minute as the Eagles came out of the gates firing on all cylinders. The rest of the first half remained scoreless as the contest was 1-0 at the half. Mersberger's second goal came in the 58
th minute which was all the insurance the Eagles would need.
Mya Chan (Brandon, S.D./Homeschool) and
Briella Babcock (Byron, Minn./Byron) assisted on the first goal for UNW. The assist was Babcock's first of the year, but for Chan it was her team leading fifth assist of the season as she continues to do a nice job setting up her teammates.
Emma Wheeler (Elgin, Minn./Pem) assisted on Mersberger's second goal which marked her first assist of the season as well.
The Eagles outshot the Lumberjills 13-2 in the contest, and their defense was superb as they did not allow a shot on goal all contest. The first half was very kind to the Eagles as they came off the bus ready to play, outshooting their opponent 9-0 in the opening 45 minutes.
Reagan Flaschberger (Shoreview, Minn./Centennial) got the start in net while
Delaynee Bohatta (Hammond, WI/St. Croix Central) also played. The two combined for a shutout.
Haley Mersberger (Kiel, Wisc./Elkhart Lake Glenbeulah) led the Eagles with four shots while
Mya Chan (Brandon, S.D./Homeschool) and
Megan Moeller (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Christian School) each contributed three shots of their own.
The Eagles will be back at Reynolds Field for their next contest as they host the North Central University Rams on Tuesday, October 11
th. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 P.M.
