ST. PAUL, Minn.- UNW Women's Soccer hosted the North Central University Rams on Tuesday night in which ended up being a historic night for the program. The Eagles completed the season series sweep of the Rams with an 8-1 victory, but the biggest story of the night was
Haley Mersberger (Kiel, Wisc./Elkhart Lake Glenbeulah) continuing her fantastic rookie campaign. The freshman broke the program record by scoring six goals in the contest leading the Eagles to the UMAC win.
Mersberger was consistent in each half, scoring a hat trick in both the first and second halves.
Mya Chan (Brandon, S.D./Homeschool),
Megan Kohrt (Monona, Wis./Homeschool),
Megan Moeller (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Christian School), and
Hannah Lageson (St. Paul, Minn./Concordia Academy) all assisted on Mersberger goals in the contest. A theme of the night for Mersberger was scoring goals in bunches and in a hurry. In the first half, she scored in both the 9
th and 10
th minutes with the goals coming only 91 seconds apart. She added another goal in the 29
th minute.
In the second half, Mersberger went back to work scoring goals at a remarkable pace. All three of her second half goals came within a seven minute stretch. The freshman scored her fourth goal of the night in the 64
th minute and then scored again in the 70
th minute to tie the school record with five goals in a game. Mersberger was tied with the record for only 26 seconds. The forward was putting on a show at Reynolds Field as she scored once again in the 70
th minute to break the school record for goals in a game. The previous record of five goals in a game was set by Kyrie Jorgenson on September 28
th, 2007 in a game against Presentation College.
Mya Chan (Brandon, S.D./Homeschool), in addition to her assist, was the one who started the scoring for the Eagles. The midfielder, who typically is the one who takes corner kicks for her team, delivered her best corner kick of the season. Chan bent in a goal off the corner kick for her second goal of the season to give the Eagles a lead in just the 7
th minute.
Megan Moeller (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Christian School), who also had an assist in the contest, continued her strong season by scoring her 7
th goal of the season in the 69
th minute. The goal was assisted by
Haley Mersberger (Kiel, Wisc./Elkhart Lake Glenbeulah) who added another notch to her impressive evening.
It was a well-rounded effort from the entire Eagle team in the victory. UNW finished the contest outshooting North Central 37-2. The Eagles amassed an impressive 14 corner kick opportunities in the contest.
