MORRIS, Minn.- The University of Northwestern Women's Soccer team played their second game in three days on Thursday afternoon when they played the Minnesota-Morris Cougars on the road. The Eagles won their third consecutive game defeating the Cougars 6-2.
These two teams played to a tie earlier this season and this game was also an extremely competitive, back-and-forth game early on. The Cougars started the scoring on their home field in the 13
th minute when they found the back of the net and took an early one goal lead. The Eagles would respond approximately six minutes later when
Megan Kohrt (Monona, Wis./Homeschool), who would have a big game, scored her second goal of the season.
Mya Chan (Brandon, S.D./Homeschool) assisted on the goal and the game was tied 1-1.
Now it was the Cougars' turn to respond and they did just that in the 27
th minute of the contest. Morris scored once again and had their second lead of the afternoon, 2-1. However, once again, the Eagles responded immediately and they would not trail again in the game. And once again, it was
Megan Kohrt (Monona, Wis./Homeschool) who provided the response. Kohrt scored her second goal of the game (third of the season) off of assists from
Haley Mersberger (Kiel, Wisc./Elkhart Lake Glenbeulah) and
Kaylin Dahl (Hanover, Minn./Buffalo) and the game was tied 2-2. The two teams would enter the halftime break locked in the 2-2 tie.
In the second half, the Eagles took control.
Haley Mersberger (Kiel, Wisc./Elkhart Lake Glenbeulah) scored her 17
th goal of the season in the 54
th minute and UNW had their first lead of the game.
Megan Moeller (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Christian School) was credited with the assist. In the 73
rd minute, those roles flipped. Mersberger assisted on a Moeller goal (her 8
th of the season) and the Eagles' lead grew to 4-2.
In the final 10 minutes of the game, UNW scored two more goals to solidify their lead. Mersberger scored once again, this time assisted by
Miciah Renn (Bemidji, Minn./Homeschool), in the 83
rd minute and
Briella Babcock (Byron, Minn./Byron) scored her 2
nd goal of the season in the 89
th minute to deliver the final nail in the coffin. The Eagles improved to 6-1-2 in UMAC play with the 6-2 victory.
UNW will look to continue this hot streak on Saturday, October 15
th when they face off with another opponent that they tied against earlier this season. The Eagles will play the Crown College Polars on the road at 7:30 P.M.
