Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | David Pederson

DeLoye Scores in the Second Half, But the Eagles Come up Just Short in Superior

SUPERIOR, Wisc.- The University of Northwestern Men's Soccer team returned to conference play on Wednesday night in a rematch of last year's UMAC Semifinal game against Wisconsin-Superior. The Eagles tied the game in the second half, but ended up falling to the Yellowjackets by a single goal, 2-1.

The Yellowjackets started the scoring by getting a goal in the 19th minute to take a 1-0 lead on their home field nearly halfway through the first half. The Eagles would be outshot 11-3 in the first half and entered the break trailing by a goal.

However, in the second half, the Eagles really began to play good soccer. They came out of the gates ready to go in the second frame and immediately tied the game up at one goal apiece. Joey McMillin (Hugo, Minn./Centennial) assisted on a goal by Tim DeLoye (Wausau, Wisc./Wausau West) only a minute and six seconds into the second half. It was a great response from UNW and the game was tied going down the stretch.

For the next twenty minutes of play, the game remained tied. It was in the 66th minute that the Yellowjackets would break the tie for good. Superior scored to take a 2-1 lead, and despite some scoring opportunities, the Eagles were not able to get an equalizer. The shots were nearly even in the second half with the Yellowjackets edging the Eagles 8-5.

Andrew Skoglund (Northfield, Minn./Skoglund Academy) was in net for the Eagles and made five saves in the contest. Tim DeLoye (Wausau, Wisc./Wausau West), Jonathan-Thomas Olsen (Modesto, Calif./James Enochs High), and Teddy Hall (Mendota Heights, Minn./Homeschool) all led the Eagles' offense with two shots apiece.

UNW will continue their conference schedule in Ashland, Wisconsin on Saturday, October 8th when they face off with Northland College. The game is scheduled for a 4:30 P.M. start.
