ST. PAUL, Minn.- The University of Northwestern Men's Soccer team hosted their second UMAC game in three days when they hosted the Bethany Lutheran College Vikings. The Vikings defeated the Eagles 1-0 in a tightly contest, hard fought, and physical contest.
It was clear from the beginning that this was going to be a challenging game for the offensive players on both sides. The first 40 minutes of the game went by scoreless as each defense was very solid on the back line. That solid defensive play, paired with stingy midfielders on both side made possession and shots hard to come by. The Vikings would find a way to break through right before the halftime whistle. BLC would score in the 40th minute what would end up being the only goal of the game. The Vikings held on to win 1-0.
The Vikings outshot the Eagles 23-8 in the contest, but the shots on goal statistic was more evenly matched. The Vikings had seven to the Eagles' four.
This matchup between two high quality UMAC teams lived up to the billing as it was a well-executed match on each side. Andrew Skoglund (Northfield, Minn./Skoglund Academy) had six saves in net for UNW, including a couple of "highlight reel" saves that kept the Eagles' deficit at one late in the second half. Jonathan-Thomas Olsen (Modesto, Calif./James Enochs High) led the Eagles' offense with four shots.
The Eagles will play their final non-conference game of the season on Monday, October 3rd before returning to UMAC play for the remainder of the season. UNW will travel to Hamline University to play the Pipers at 4:00 P.M.
