WINONA, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team traveled to St. Mary's University on Friday for their season opener against the Cardinals. UNW battled but fell 9-0 to SMU.
In doubles, the Cardinals won the #3 match 8-2 to get the first point. The Eagles each won four games in both the #1 and #2 doubles matches but fell 8-4 in each.
In singles, the Cardinals took a 6-1, 6-0 win at the #1 match to go up 4-0. The match was decided at the #6 singles spot where the Eagles fell 6-1, 6-3 as St. Mary's took the deciding fifth point. SMU won the remaining matches to claim a 9-0 team win.
Next up for Northwestern is another road match on Saturday, February 5, at the College of St. Benedict.
