Men's Soccer Outlasted in Overtime Game at Minnesota Morris

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's soccer team traveled to Minnesota Morris to take on the Cougars in their first conference game of the 2021 spring season on Wednesday. After a scoreless 100-minutes of play, Morris found the back of the net in sudden death to win the game 1-0 in the second overtime period.

The Eagles fall to 4-7 overall and 0-1 in UMAC play.

The first half of play began with a shot from Northwestern's Samuel Hendry (Spooner, Wis./Spooner High School). UNW dominated in the shot category taking eight in the first half to the Cougars two. The Eagles possessed the ball for most of the half, taking chances, but coming up empty.

The second half started with a shot by Minnesota Morris and an Austin Gunkel (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) save. Time was running out as the Eagles again out-shot Morris 15-7. Unable to score any goals, the game went into overtime.

Knowing what was on the line, Northwestern came out ready to play right away. Their strong defense and impressive saves by Austin Gunkel (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) kept them in the game. Each team took one shot in the first overtime.

Just over three minutes into the second overtime, a Cougar player split the Northwestern defense to send the ball into the corner of the net to end the game, 1-0.

The Eagles out-shot the Cougars 24-12 in the entirety of the game. Each team had three corner kicks, while Austin Gunkel (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) made four saves in net.

Cole Uplegger (New Prague, Minn./New Prague High School) had an impressive 10 shots (four shots-on-goal) his career high. William Marsan (Eden Prairie, Minn./Home School) added five shots (two shots-on-goal).

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday as they host North Central University (MN) for an evening game, kickoff set for 7:30 pm.
