Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Emily Ojambo

Men's Soccer Defeats North Central, 2-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's soccer team hosted their first game of the 2021 spring season Saturday evening against the North Central University Rams. One goal each half for the Eagles game them the 2-0 win.

UNW improves to 5-7 on the season and 1-1 in UMAC play. Northwestern took 29 overall shots in the game to the Rams eight.

Right off the bat, the Eagles were ready to go taking multiple shots on net. Josh Hintz (New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View) took a penalty kick early on that was saved by North Central's goalie. Five minutes later, JT Olsen found the back of the net off of a pass from David Shoemaker (Danville, Iowa/Danville Community School). The Rams had a number of corner kicks but were unable to capitalize.

Heading into the half Northwestern took 15 shots to the Rams eight.

The Eagles brought the same energy heading into the second half as they scored less than 10 minutes into the half. William Marsan (Eden Prairie, Minn./Home School) found the back of the net to give Northwestern a 2-0 lead early on in the second.

UNW did not allow a single shot in the second half and continued to dominate on the offensive end having shots and possessing most of the half.

JT Olsen finished the game with 10 shots (three shots-on-goal) and one goal, while Luke McCann (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield High School) and Josh Hintz (New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View) each had four shots. Goalie, Austin Gunkel (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) earned the shut-out win.

Northwestern will travel to Northland College on Tuesday for another conference matchup in Ashland, Wisconsin; tipoff is set for 3:30 pm.
