ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's soccer team hosted Martin Luther College on Saturday afternoon.
Koby Wesselink (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar High School) scored his fifth goal of the season, but it was not enough as the Knights scored three, Eagles falling 3-0.
UNW falls to 5-10 overall and 1-4 in the UMAC. JT Olsen led the Eagles taking eight shots (four shots-on-goal) but was not able to capitalize.
Northwestern fought hard to begin the game and kept control most of the half. In the fifteenth minute, MLC scored their first goal on a small breakaway in the Eagles defensive third. UNW took three shots after the goal but found themselves down two as the Knights scored their second with under two minutes left in the half.
The Eagles had 10 shots in the first half to the Knights seven. Goalkeeper
Austin Gunkel (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) grabbed two saves.
With less than five minutes gone in the second half,
Koby Wesselink (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar High School) scored a rocket of a shot to come within one of Martin Luther. Four more Eagles shots were all unable to tie things up. The Knights scored their third of the night off defensive errors.
At the end of regulation, Northwestern took 16 shots (nine shots-on-goal). JT Olsen led with eight shots for the Eagles and
Koby Wesselink (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar High School) had five.
The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday as they host the University of Wisconsin-Superior for a 5:00 pm kickoff.
