LAKEVILLE, Minn. - The University of Northwestern St. Paul Women's Tennis team battled the University of Minnesota Morris Cougars in a match of conference unbeatens. UNW entered the match 2-0 in conference play while the Morris Cougars entered with a conference record of 3-0.
The Eagles jumped at the opportunity to gain an early lead, capturing all three doubles matches, highlighted by a strong 8-3 performance at #1 doubles from the duo of Mafee Rinta (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) and Belinda Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander).
With a sweep in doubles, the Eagles only needed two singles victories to clinch the match. Rinta (#1 singles) and Taylar Smith (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) (#4 singles) rose to the occasion in singles and clinched the match early in the evening with 6-2, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-0 wins respectively.
After an Eagles loss at #2 singles to make the team score 5-1, the last three matches all went to third set super-tiebreakers. Both Jessica Gross (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) and Elli Dodge (Wahpeton, N.D./Wahpeton) dropped their first set before battling back to reclaim the second set. In the super-tiebreakers, Gross made her opponent earn every point, but came up just short with an 8-10 loss in the super-tiebreaker. In Dodge's match, she was able to fend off two match points at 7-9 and 8-9 and was able to get to match point herself at 10-9. Unfortunately, Dodge was unable to capitalize on the late match point and fell in a tough super-tiebreaker 10-12.
With the team score at 5-3, the Cougars looked to make it a one-point loss, but Angel Beaufeaux (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) had other plans in her super-tiebreaker. After dropping her second set 4-6, Beaufeaux closed with a strong performance in her super-tiebreaker, winning 10-3.
After the conference clash, the Eagles improved to a 3-0 record in conference play and look to pick up a non-conference win against Buena Vista on Friday night.
