GREEN BAY, Wis. - The UNW Eagles played the St. Norbert Green Knights in today's match at the Green Bay Tennis Center.
In doubles play, the Eagles fell at #2 doubles before rebounding quick with solid performances at #1 by
Mafee Rinta (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) and
Belinda Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) and at #3 by
Sabrina Bush (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) and
Angel Beaufeaux (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin), both winning 8-2.
The Eagles took the 2-1 lead heading into singles play where
Taylar Smith (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) was able to make quick work of her opponent winning 6-1, 6-4 at #5 singles. With the 3-1 lead, the Green Knights evened up the scoreboard by winning well contested #1 and #3 matches 2-6, 2-6 and 3-6, 2-6 respectively.
With the match tied at 3-3, in all came down to the last three points at #2, #4, and #6 singles. Beaufeaux was able to tally the fourth point for the Eagles winning 6-4, 6-1, bringing them within one point from winning the team match. At #4 singles, after falling in the first set 3-6, Bush was able to hold service at 5-6 to force the seven-point tie-breaker. While putting up a tough fight, she was unable to force it to the third set super tiebreaker, falling 3-7 in the tiebreaker. The Knights evened up the score, 4-4 with one match to go.
The team match came down to two singles, where Weddle won in a tightly contested first set, 7-6 (8-6). She was unable to win the second set, which meant the match was heading to the super tiebreaker. With the crowd at the Green Bay Tennis Center on its feet, Belinda was able to take an early lead and close out her match winning 10-3 in the super tie breaker. With Weddle's win, the Eagles emerged victorious in the team match, 5-4 and move to 3-1 on the season.
