Eagles Sweep North Central in First Conference Match

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's volleyball team hosted the North Central (MN) Rams Saturday afternoon for their first conference game of the season. North Central stayed in game one, but ultimately the Eagles ended the match with a sweep; 25-19, 25-12 and 25-14.

UNW moves to 16-5 overall and 1-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC).

In set one, the Eagles were down to the Rams by five after a six point run early on. After a few NCU errors, Northwestern tied things up at 12. UNW kept the lead for the remainder of the set and won 25-19.

The Eagles had 16 kills to the Rams eight after set one.

Northwestern went on a nine point run in set two to go up 13-6 over NCU. The Eagles continued to dominate, while also playing solid defense against the Rams attack. Set two concluded UNW on top after a Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACRAY) kill, 25-12.

The Eagles had an impressive 19 kills, no errors and .613 hitting average to the Rams six kills.

In set three, Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) went on a serving run herself (10-0). UNW went up by as many as 16 points.

The third set ended Northwestern 25, North Central 14.

Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian), Gabby Straub (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) and Talia Gruthusen (Dryer, Ind./Lake Central) led things for the Eagles all downing 10 kills. Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) served five aces on the day and Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACRAY) dished out 37 assists. Marylyn Schroyer (Ft. Collins, Colo./Ft. Collins) added 17 digs, while Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) and Gabby Straub (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) both picked up 10.

The Eagles are back in action next Thursday as they head to Crown College to take on the Storm.
