ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's volleyball team traveled to Crown College to take on the Storm on Thursday night.
Lucy Pelzel (St. Joseph, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) highlighted the night with a career high seven aces, tying fifth all-time for aces in a match. The Eagles only allowed the Storm 22 points in the match with set scores of: 25-14, 25-11 and 25-12.
UNW moves to 17-5 overall and 2-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC).
Set one began with a seven point run by the Eagles led by three kills by
Gabby Straub (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) and two by
Talia Gruthusen (Dryer, Ind./Lake Central). Northwestern's biggest lead of the set came at the end, up by 11 to take set one 25-14.
UNW improved in set two taking 15 kills with a .48 hitting average to Crown's six kills. The Eagles cruised to an easy 25-11 win to go up 2-0 on the Storm.
Lucy Pelzel (St. Joseph, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) recorded four aces in set number three to help Northwestern to their second conference win of the season. Pelzel led late in the set to give UNW a nine point run on Crown, 20-4.
Cassie Flynn (New Franken, Wis./Luxemburg Casco) finished things off with a kill to end the set and match 25-12.
Overall the Eagles ended with a .350 hitting average with 41 kills to Crown's 17.
Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) led with 10 kills,
Talia Gruthusen (Dryer, Ind./Lake Central) had nine and
Caitlyn Pruis (Sioux Falls, SD./Sioux Falls Christian) added eight.
Lucy Pelzel (St. Joseph, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) had her career high, seven aces and
Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACRAY) dished out 25 assists.
Northwestern is back in action Saturday afternoon as they head to Ashland, Wisconsin to take on the Lumber Jills, play beginning at 3 pm.
