ST. PAUL, Minn- Northwestern hosted the College of St. Scholastica for the Eagles first round of the UMAC Tournament Thursday evening in the Ericksen Center. Northwestern extended their winning streak to nine with a 76-54 win over the Saints.
Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian) led UNW with her career high, 24 points.
The game started with a block from
Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy); UNW's first point was a free throw from
Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley). In the first quarter Northwestern netted eight points off Saints' turnovers and scored four second chance points. The Eagles ended the first quarter with a four point lead, 20-16.
Northwestern kept the lead throughout the second quarter with 14 points in the paint compared to St. Scholastica's eight. UNW had four fast break points and the Eagles ended the second quarter up 37-32.
Third quarter started with a bucket from
Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy), Northwestern leading 39-32. The Eagles pulled away, scoring 21 to the Saints' nine points. UNW was 9-12 from the free throw line and played great defense this quarter keeping the Saints to nine points. The Eagles went into the fourth quarter ahead of CSS, 58-41.
The energy was high starting the fourth quarter as UNW was looking to finish the game and advance in the UMAC Tournament. Northwestern started with a steal from
Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian) into a triple from behind the arc by
Courtney Schmidt (Spring Valley, Minn./Kingsland). The fourth continued with selfless team play and aggressive action as the Eagles finished strong winning 76-54.
The Eagles finished a well played game with 14 steals, five blocks and 25 points off St. Scholastica's turnovers.
Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian) led the team in scoring with a career high of 24 points while adding four steals and two blocks.
Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) added 17 points and
Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) added 16.
Northwestern will be advancing in the UMAC Tournament on Saturday hosting Bethany Lutheran College for Semifinal action, tip-off set for 4:30 pm.
