ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern St. Paul Baseball team swept Crown College in a doubleheader on Monday night. The Eagles earned a 10-9 win in extra innings for game one and won game two 6-5 in seven innings.
Northwestern struck fast and built a lead early in both games. In the opener, the Eagles scored twice in the first before stringing together a five-run second inning to take a 7-0 lead. The Storm responded by scoring six in the top of the fourth and added three more over the next couple innings to take a 9-7 lead going into the seventh and final inning.
With their backs to the wall, the Eagles responded as Keegan Vercoe (Queen Creek, Ariz./Poston Butte) found the outfield grass with a single to drive in two runs and tie the game at 9-9. Three innings later, UNW loaded the bases for Aaron Severson (Columbia Heights, Minn./Columbia Heights), who drew a walk-off walk to give the Eagles the 10-9 win in game one.
Game two followed a similar patter with Northwestern jumping out to an early lead and Crown clawing their way back into it. The Storm got on the board first with a solo shot off the bat of Mason Brock. The Eagles managed to one-up the hit in the bottom half of the frame as Vercoe launched a two-run bomb to take a 2-1 lead for UNW.
Andrew Simonson (Hudson, Wis./East Ridge) added to the Northwestern lead with a bases-clearing double in the second inning to put UNW up 5-1. Once more though, the Storm battled back and made it a 5-4 game in the fourth inning.
The Eagles gave themselves some breathing room with a run in the sixth, and they would need it as the Storm's Kyle Schroedle hit a two-out home run to left field in the top of the seventh. Severson got the next batter to strike out looking to earn the save and give the Eagles the 6-5 win.
Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) earned the win for the Eagles in game one, pitching five shutout innings in relief. Sam Ludzack (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) got the win in game two for UNW.
Next up for the Eagles is a single game with Hamline at home on Thursday, March 25, at 4:30pm.
