Baseball Scores a Dozen in Win Over Pipers

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern St. Paul Baseball team surged for 10 runs in their final three innings at bat for a 12-2 win over the Hamline University Pipers on Thursday evening.

The Eagles and Pipers traded runs through the first five innings in a back-and-forth stalemate with neither team able to put up a crooked number. That all changed in the sixth as UNW broke open the game with a four run inning. Northwestern showed that that half inning was no fluke as they proceeded to score thrice more in the seventh and another three in the eighth to take control of the contest.

Sam Peterson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) and Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) each led the Eagles with three hits and three RBI apiece. Peterson drove in all of his runs with bombs over the outfield wall, launching a solo shot in the third and a two-run blast in the eighth. Lindow did his damage with runners in scoring position, as he laced an RBI single to right in the sixth and then drove home two more with a bases-loaded hit up the middle.

Keegan Vercoe (Queen Creek, Ariz./Poston Butte) flashed his power in the four-run sixth with a home run to lead off the inning, breaking the 2-2 tie with what would turn out to be the game-winning run.

Eight Eagles had a hit and each of them scored at least one run in the win. Seven Eagles combined to drive in the 12 runs.

Bryce Crabb (Des Moines, Iowa/Grand View Christian) earned the win for the Eagles. The sophomore pitched four shutout innings in relief, allowing just three hits while striking out four.

Next up for Northwestern is a road game at St. Thomas on Monday, March 29, at 3:30pm. It will be the fourth time this season the Eagles have played the Tommies.
