ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern Men's Basketball squad was back in action Saturday afternoon, hosting Conference foe, St. Scholastica.
UNW came into the matchup with a 4-1 record, 1-0 in UMAC play, while the Saints own a 2-0 record, also 1-0 in the UMAC. The Eagles went 2-1 against Scholastica last season, beating them twice in the regular season but falling to them in the UMAC Conference Tournament.
Both teams came to play in this one, trading baskets for most of the first half. UNW's biggest lead in the half was 7, but CSS was able to cut that to 1 going into the half, making it a score of 38-37.
UNW dominated the paint in the half, scoring 30 points compared to CSS's 18.
The Saints came out of the 2
nd half on a roll, going on a 21-6 run to bring the score to 58-44 with 13 minutes left on the contest. CSS kept their roll going, making it hard on UNW to cut the deficit.
The Eagles did find a way to creep their way back into the contest with great defense and multiple big shots from
Noah Alm (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) and
Kyle Kaemingk (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) to bring the score within 6 with 6 minutes to go. UNW kept fighting back but was not able to overcome the deficit, falling to the Saints, 81-73.
Kyle Kaemingk (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) led the Eagles in scoring with 21 points and 9 rebounds while
Noah Alm (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) contributed 17 points and 8 rebounds.
Cole Elrod (Elk River, Minn./Spectrum) chipped in 11 points for the game.
The Eagles now sit at 4-2 on the season (1-1 in the UMAC).
UNW will hit the hardwood once again on Thursday, February 11
th when they head to Morris, MN to take on Minnesota Morris at 7pm.
